A stranger: ”I belong to all families ”

/ käännös suomen kielestä englanniksi Kirsti Suomivuori /

“ I kiss you, sweetheart “.
My mother closes her letters.

” Do you know my dear mother,
nobody calls me sweetheart here.
Do you imagine me as a miniature sculpture that is alive…?
And you, forever young see me.
A smile, an ornament .
You dream of my golden hair.
You see my deeds and words as golden.
Oh, if only people would judge me with my mother s voice.
“He” would understand my worries…
Then, as in my rosy childhood,
it would be difficult to count my smiles.
Then through days and nights
I would fly in my dreams…
Then his slander
would not make me stoop my shoulders.

One day I’ll be everyone’s kin,
And a total stranger will comfort me in my distress.
And a stranger will not judge me
because of my character, looks or poetry…
And a stranger will become a friend –
like you, my mother,
and he will write me a letter one day, closing
“See you soon, my sweetheart –
With love and kisses…”
